Hamstring Tendon Rupture / Strain

What is a rupture of the hamstring tendons?
The hamstring muscles consist of the Biceps femoris, Semitendinosus and Semimembranosus The muscles insert at the back of the knee through tendons. It is possible for these tendons to be torn during an explosive or kicking movement.

What are the symptoms?

  • A sudden sharp pain in the back of the knee.
  • Swelling, tenderness and heat coming from the point where the tendon inserts into the knee.
  • Pain when you bend the knee against resistance.

What can the athlete do?

  • Apply R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
  • After the first 2 to 3 days wear a heat retainer.
  • See a sport sinjury professional who can advise on a rehabilitation programme.

What can a sports injury specialist or doctor do?

  • Advise on a rehabilitation programme consisting of stretching, strengthening and sports massage techniques.
  • Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication.
  • Apply a plaster cast.
  • Operate.
