What I learned in my lesson today

Today, I had a great lesson.
We adressed the need for pace (with spin of course) on my forehand (which can be applied to my backhand) in order to hit a deep penetrating ball.
On my forehand, I was leaning into the ball too much and catching it to high at contact. Also, my legs were all over the place and waving in the air.
I worked on going from low to high (for spin), and most of all bringing the raquet head through the swing FAST (where the pace comes from). Also if I thing about following through to the side rather than back, it helps to keep the momentum forward.
Another thing we worked on was the high bouncy deep (or short) balls that I so often catch late and high out of my strike zone. We worked on moving back to hit the slow, deep, high ones. on the deep fast ones, I usually catch it on the rise pretty well, but the medium deep high ones, I need to get my racket ready before the ball even bounces, so that I can stroke the ball RIGHT AFTER it bounces (keeping it from getting too high).
We looked at serves really quickly, and decided I need to on both 1st and 2nd serves continue taking my racket back before I start, so it can be completely loose, then tossing not too high and not too far left. On first serves I can really go after it, but on 2nd I need to hit it "regular." The only thing to work on is to make sure that I don't get the contact too low, and maybe higher than now. But this way, I'm getting SPIN which is what is most important right now. |
