What I did in clinic today

Lisa and I warmed up volleys and overheads while the others got their 20.
We continued with the "bring the person in with a shortball and play out the point" game/drill in clinic.
John split John S. and Andrew up since they were goofing off and I hit with John S. I played pretty well when he was coming in, trying to stay energetic and we had some really good points. He barely won 10-12.
Then it was my turn to play coming in to net. My feet were starting to get tired, and I didn't go for as many balls as I could have gotten. (john his several overheads just out of my reach and just in which I probably could have gotten in I had moved to set up more.) Anyway, I didn't play badly, just was getting tired and a little lazy with the footwork toward the end. I didn't always make those little footwork adjustments when I needed to.
Next, since we finished before everyone else, we played where you hit five balls then the point starts. I was starting to get a little sluggisha and I was letting John S. dictate play too much. Afterwards, John walked with me and reminded me how I need to hit my stokes deep with pace, moving my opponent around, so that he won't have the chance to dictate play. Despite his control of the points, and because I was sluggish, I was playing Ok, but not well enough and he won 11-5.
I think that is what I need to work on in the next couple of weeks if I want to move up the the better clinic for the winter. I need to stay energized in the points, make the little footwork adjustments, keep loose (so I can hit my stokes like I know I can, with topspin and pace), and stay away from hitting the ball right back to my opponent.
Overall, It was a very productive day, and I feel like I am playing alot better than last week on everything.
I'm playing doubles tomorrow with the ladies, and hopefully I can practice my volleys and just have a good time. |
